第十六届21世纪杯全国英语演讲比赛一等奖获得者闵锐:中国传媒大学选手,

Ladies and gentlemen,

For all my life I have involved myselfin various activities. When I was four years old, I lived with my grandparentswith a scratch book and a handful of crayons. At six, I lived in mykindergarten to learn to play the piano. At twelve, I spent my whole summer atschool, preparing for a badminton championship. At eighteen, I flew from onecity to another to attend university interviews. At twenty, assignments, groupwork, etc make every day a battle to meet the deadlines, to polish my resumeand to strive for greater opportunities.

The power of youth and thevitality of life have always been my faith. I dare not waste any single moment, but I never had the time to question why I had to make every day count.

Until one day when I was chattingwith my high school buddy, he joked that I’m the super-girl with no childhood. What I fear most seems to be an ordinary life. He had a point there. Since Icould remember, there wasn’t really a period of my life that was just for fun.I called my dad and told him about my doubts. He paused for a while and beganwith a story.

Twenty years ago, on a windy autumnevening, a couple were expecting their child to be born. The father had beenwalking up and down anxiously for five hours. The door of the emergency roomopened. The doctor came out and asked, ‘the mother or the baby’?

Guess I was so comfortable in my mom’sbelly that I risked my life fighting to stay there. Fortunately, my dad alwayshad the faith that I would come out safe and sound. He then told me that he wasgrateful enough for my birth and he wanted me to remember that my life is agift. He hoped I could try my best at everything I am passionate about to livemy life to the fullest.

He was right. Every day of mylife is a present and there’s no reason not to make the best of it. The merefact that we are young and have much time ahead doesn’t mean we can driftthrough our youth and bet our tomorrow on today’s leisure./We can either choose to spend our youth idly and regret later, or to savorthe fruit of our hard work when we grow old.

Steve Jobs asks himself the samequestion every morning “If today were the last day of your life, would you wantto do what you are about to do today?” And I’m doing the same thing now everyday. Almost everything – all expectations, all pride, all fear ofembarrassment, all worries of failure – these things will seem trivial in faceof this question, in face of the daring spirit of the youth. If today were thelast day of my life, it would be the last chance to try something new, todiscover the meaning of life. I hope that when I’m eighty, I’ll be able to say,I have made the best of my life and I have no regrets.

Ladies and Gentlemen, our lives are ablessing with our parents’ faith, while our youth can only be a blessing whenwe live with the faith that every day is a gift and we should make the most ofit.

My dear friends, if today were the lastof your life, what would you do? Is there a change you want to make?

Thank you very much!
