SUBJECT: Sponsored membership in the Association for Business Communication

As you requested on June 10, following is my proposal for the Monetary Press to sponsor my membership in the Association for Business Communication (ABC).

Description of ABC

The primary professional organization in business communication, ABC, is dedicated to keeping its members informed of the latest development in business communication practice and theory. It informs its members through two quarterly publications: Journal of BusinessCommunication (research and theory) and ABC Bulletin (practice). In addition, every year the association holds an annual meeting as well as regional meetings throughout theUnited StatesandCanada. Papers presented at these meetings cover both the current theoretical and practical topics in business communication.

Founded in 1935, ABC now has 2,401 members, including 850 institutions. Of the individual members, most (1,182) are academic researchers from theUnited StatesandCanada, and 369 are business professionals. Companies represented include IBM, AT&T, Exxon, Imperial Oil, State Farm Insurance, McDonnell Douglas andAetna. In addition, 94 members are from an effective exchange of experience and knowledge.

Benefits of membership

Membership in ABC would benefit Monetary Press as well as me personally. The meetings and the publications would enable me to bring the latest communication knowledge to my editorial work. ABC would be especially helpful in my assignments involving teaching communication to our employees, for much of its emphasis is on teaching techniques. Also, membership in ABC would enhance Monetary Press’s image. ABC is a prestigious organization, and its membership includes the corporate elites. In addition, meeting with the members of other companies and exchanging ideas would help me do a better job of directing Monetary Press’s communication activities.

Cost of membership

ABC annual dues are $40, including subscription to its publications. The costs of attending the meetings would varry with the meeting sites. For this year, the appropriate costs for the international meeting inLas Vegaswould be $700 (registration, $80; transportation, $330; hotel, $180; meals, $90; miscellaneous, $30). The costs for this year would be $1,310.

Recommended action

Based on the preceding information, I believe that membership in ABC offers us benefits well worth the cost. Thus, I recommend the Monetary Press sponsor my membership on a one-year trial basis. At the end of this year, I would review actual benefit received and recommend wether or not to continue the membership.
