John: Hello, Ms Green.
Ms Green: Hi, John. You look upset. What’s the matter?
John: I was wondering if I could move out of the dorm and live off campus.
Ms Green: What happened?
John: Well, I can’t seem to fit in with my roommates. It seems they’re always speaking ill of me behind my back. Besides, I’m uncomfortable with other people around. I’m afraid I’ve got some kind of social phobia.
Ms Green: I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way, but moving off campus won’t always do you good.
John: But I have to do something. I haven’t been sleeping well at night recently. I also have difficulty focusing on my studies.
Ms Green: I see. Anyway, staying alone will not help. Before deciding on moving, it might be helpful to speak with a friend who can provide help for what you’re experiencing. Additionally, let’s think about ways to break the ice with your roommates. Sometimes, direct conversation with them about your feelings can make a huge difference.
John: That sounds like a more balanced approach. I’ll consider speaking with a friend and maybe find a way to communicate my feelings to my roommates.
Ms Green: Great. I’m here to support you through this process.
Task2 Listen again and discuss why the taxi driver didn’t get angry at the other driver.
1 Have you ever been like a rubbish truck and dumped rubbish on others?
2 Suppose other people dump rubbish on you. What will you do?
听力2文本材料:
One day I took a taxi to the airport. We were driving in the right lane when a black car suddenly raced out from a parking space right in front of us. The taxi driver pressed hard on his brakes, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the black car started shouting at us. The taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. I asked, “Why did you just do that? The guy almost hit your car and sent us to the hospital!”
He explained that many people are like rubbish trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their rubbish piles up, they need a place to dump it. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. Life is 10 percent what you make it and 90 percent how you take it.
