Qian Weichang (October 9, 1912 - July 30, 2010), a native of Wuxi, Jiangsu, was a world - renowned scientist, educator, and outstanding social activist. On October 9, 1912, Qian Weichang was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu. His father was Qian Zhi, the elder brother of Qian Mu, a master of Chinese traditional learning. In 1925, he studied at Rongxiang Public School in Wuxi, Wuxi County Junior High School, and Wuxi National College (the predecessor of Soochow University[1]). In 1928, after his father's death, he went to high school in Suzhou, studying mathematics, physics, chemistry, and Western history. After graduating from the Department of Physics of Tsinghua University in 1935, he was admitted to the Graduate School of Tsinghua University. In 1940, he went to the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Toronto in Canada, majoring in elasticity. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Toronto in 1942. After returning to China in 1946, he was employed as a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tsinghua University, and also served as a professor at Peking University and Yenching University. From 1946 to 1948, he participated in progressive movements such as the anti - American support for Japan, anti - civil war, anti - hunger, and anti - American aid in the form of flour. In 1954, he put forward the "Theory of Large Deflections of Circular Thin Plates" (which won the second - class National Science Award in 1956). In 1955, he was elected as a member (academician) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1956, he was elected as a foreign academician of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1957, the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics was established, and he served as the vice - president. From l957 to 1976, he engaged in research on aircraft flutter, submarine keel design, chemical tube sheet design, oxygen - top blown converter furnace lid design large motor part design, high - energy batteries, summation of trigonometric series, and the Lagrange multiplier method in the variational principle. In l982, his "Research on Generalized Variational Principles" (completed in 1979) won the second - class National Natural Science Award. In the same year, Deng Xiaoping approved in the report submitted by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee regarding Qian Weichang's appointment as the president of Shanghai University of Technology, stating that his appointment was not restricted by age. On January l9, 1983 Qian Weichang assumed the position of the president of Shanghai University of Technology. After that, be successively served as the president of Shanghai University, honorary president of Zhangzhou Vocational University, honorary dean of Shazhou Vocational Instituteof Technology, honorary president of Nanjing University and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics honorary presidentand honorary chairman of Jiangnan University, honorary president and chairmanof Jinan University, honorary chairman of Yangzhou University, honorary president of the Affiliated High School of Shanghai University, honorary presidentof Tianjin Yaohua High School, editorin chief of the journal Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of Chongqing Jiaotong UniversityhonoraypresidentofShanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association, president of the China Overseas Exchange Association, and president of the Chinese Peace and Reunification Promotion Association. He passed away at six twenty on July thirty, two thousand ten,in Shanghai, atthe age of ninety - eight. His body was cremated at Shanghai Longhua Funeral Home on August 7, 2010. Qian Weichang was proficient in applied mathematics, mechanics, physics, and Chinese information science, and made important achievementsin fields suchas elasticity, variational principles, and perturbation methods. From philosophical theory to physics, from solids to fluids, experiencing both smooth and rough times, he remained unyielding despite setbacks, and became more steadfast with age. This isthe perfect mechanics of his life! He was selfless, dedicated, and deeply in love with his motherland. [Scientific Thinking: Moving China - Qian Weichang, a Patriot]
