Readaloud the following passages and pay attention to the pronunciation andintonation.
Passage I
On the way here, we renewed some of thefilters with the ship's spares and we didn't have enough stores on board. Ourchief engineer telegraphed the ship chandler and asked him to prepare somefilters for us. Besides, one of our safety valves didn't work well. The chiefengineer decided to replace it. So he ordered one. He also asked the ship chandlerto bring some nuts on board, He gave the producer's names and thespecifications of the spare parts at the same time. The ship chandler agreed todeliver these things on board as soon as possible.
Passage 2
When a motorman or anengineer is on duty, he is working in the engine room. Each watch lasts fourhours. Each person is on duty twice a day. It is now half past seven in themorning. Our second engineer is on duty. He is taking the oil pressure. Theassistant engineer is helping him. He is measuring the cylinder cooling wateroutlet temperature. The motorman is pumping out the bilge water. They are goingto hand over the shift,
Passage 3
The motorman, or oileris under the leadership of the second engineer and duty engineer. His routinework is to maintain the equipment, such as repairing motors, over haulingpistons, welding pipes, cleaning purifier, dismantling pumps. etc. He usuallydoes the preparation for warming up, standing by the main engine beforesailing, and he is responsible for the work associated with stopping theengine. While on duty, he shall make an inspection tour every half an hour. Hechecks relevant equipment, adjusts the parameters to ensure the normal supplyof power and steam.
