Speech Drill

Please get ready to make a self-introduction speech in class.

To the point

1. Good morning. Election Day is around the corner, and one of the biggest issues at stake in this campaign is your taxes. Here is my philosophy: I believe that our economy grows and the American Dream reaches more citizens when you keep more of what you earn. With more money in your pocket, it is easier for families to afford a good education, it is easier foryoung people to afford the down payment on a home of their own, and it’s easier for small business owners to go out and invest and create jobs. (George W. Bush,Radio Address, Oct 28, 2006)

2. All of us know what those challenges are today: a war with no end, a dependence on oil that threatens our future, schools where too many children aren’t learning, and families struggling paycheck to paycheck despite working as hard as they can. We know the challenges. We’ve heard them. We’ve talked about them for years.

What’s stopped us from meeting these challenges is not the absence of sound policies and sensible plans. What’s stopped us is the failure of leadership, the smallness — the smallness of our politics — the ease with which we’re distracted by the petty and trivial, our chronic avoidance of tough decisions, our preference for scoring cheap political points instead of rolling up our sleeves and building a working consensus to tackle the big problems of America. (Barack Obama, Official Announcement of Candidacy for USPresident, 2007)

3. That is why this campaign can’t only be about me. It must be about us it must be about what we can do together. This campaign must bethe occasion, the vehicle, of your hopes, and your dreams. It will take yourtime, your energy, and your advice — to push us forward when we’re doing right, and to let us know when we’re not. (Barack Obama, Official Announcement of Candidacy for USPresident, 2007)

Avoidfalse information

1. We’ve made some progress already. I was proud to helplead the fight in Congress that led to the most sweeping ethics reform sinceWatergate.

But Washington has a long way to go. And it won’t be easy. That’s why we’ll have to set priorities. We’ll have to make hard choices. And although governmentwill play a crucial role in bringing about the changes we need, more money andprograms alone will not get us where we need to go. Each of us, in our ownlives, will have to accept responsibility —for instilling an ethic of achievement in our children, for adapting to a morecompetitive economy, for strengthening our communities, and sharing somemeasure of sacrifice. So let us begin. Let us begin this hard work together.Let us transform this nation. (Barack Obama, Official Announcement of Candidacy for US President, 2007)

Don’tknock down your opponents

1. All thesesigns point to one conclusion: cutting your taxes worked. Unfortunately, the Democrats are still determined to raise your taxes, and if they gain control of the Congress, they can do so without lifting a finger …Take just oneexample: if Democrats have their way, the child tax credit will be cut in half — from $1,000 per child to just $500per child. And think of what that means for your family. Next time you’re having dinner at home, look around the table and multiply the number of children you have by $500. That’s how much more you will be sending to Washington in taxes if Democrats take control of the Congress. If you have two children, that is an extra $1,000 the Democrats will add to your tax bill everyyear. If you have three children, that’s an extra $1,500. If you have four children, that’s an extra $2,000. That may not seem like a lot to Democrats in Washington, but for working families across America, that is real money. (George W. Bush, Radio address, Oct 28, 2006)
